Vienna. The records are stacked in boxes and the sales tables are leaning against the wall: “There is still a lot to do,” says Till Philippi, while he shows his colleagues where to unload the delivered boxes. Around 4,000 visitors are expected here on Saturday and Sunday in the Ottakringer Brewery: Philippi is organizing the Vinyl & Music Festival for the fourth time.

A new, small vinyl scene has emerged in Vienna since the record boom. But who would have thought that Mistelbach is also an international center for vinyl: Pro-Ject is based in Lower Austria, the world market leader for turntables in the hi-fi sector. “It pays to go there and take a look at the company,” says Philippi. “But of course there are also many in Vienna who swim with the wave.”

The Austrian market share of vinyl is currently leveling between eleven and twelve percent. “It will always remain a niche product,” Philippi estimates. “But the record has been making an incredible comeback, especially among young people, for years.” By the way, Philippi got the first record player himself from his grandmother as a child, he says. “That was where my passion began.”

This passion turned Philippi, who originally worked in advertising, into a profession with the festival. “We wanted to do something that covered several areas of music – just making a record exchange was too boring for us,” says Philippi. At the Vinyl & Music Festival , which takes place in the Ottakringer brewery every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m., you can buy records, attend workshops and attend concerts (the festival pass for both days costs twelve euros). A warm-up party is already on the program on Friday.

This year there is a focus on smaller indie labels at the festival. And in addition to live concerts, there are also record presentations: “We are trying to rediscover unknowns from the 1970s.” For example, a record by the Austrian artists’ collective Ixthuluh, which was not previously available on vinyl, can be heard for the first time on Saturday.

Coffee shop

One of the exhibitors at the festival is Kay Burki. A year and a half ago, he closed his small LP caféon Erdbergstrasse. Burki sells records on the lower floor, and if you climb the steep stairs you can drink coffee or beer in cozy retro armchairs. There Burki stirs in his cup: “You can take your time to browse through the records and talk shop with other music lovers,” explains the independent sound engineer, explaining his concept. Burki had been haunted by the idea since the 1990s – but then the record was replaced by the CD. When vinyl was revived about five years ago, he decided to put the concept into practice. And how does he explain the new enthusiasm for the record? “I think it’s like books: it feels more valuable to have something in your hand.”

By the way, Burki deliberately wanted to go to the third district: “It didn’t make sense to me to compete with the other shops in the 7th or 8th district. Even if each of these record stores has a specialization. ”Burki has become a trusted repairer for many residents of Grätzel when the turntable is causing problems. “It wasn’t originally planned, but that’s how it developed,” says the Dutchman.

Burki has been in Vienna for six years, and since then the number of vinyl stores has grown noticeably. In his homeland, however, the scene is much larger – the largest vinyl exchange in Europe is located in Utrecht.

Market & party

If you want to expand your record collection, you can also do this at the GÖnyl vinyl market in Elektro Gönner. The market starts on Saturday at 7 p.m. – for the third time. The meeting has been taking place monthly since January, where you can also get to know label owners and DJs. After the market there is also an after party in the Elektro Gönner , curated by the label MSR Distro. Another vinyl flea market will take place on March 29th in Chelsea: Hobby collectors sell vinyl for an afternoon.

For three months there has also been a vinyl corner in the main library . “We noticed that there is simply a great need,” it says there. Visitors can listen to an inventory of 260 discs on turntables (with headphones). “But just setting up a turntable would be a thing of the past.” That is why there is a compromise between nostalgia and modernity: the records can be digitized on site and thus also heard on the go.

A declaration of love to the record

The magic of the record remains undamaged even in the digital age. It is precisely the imperfect that makes their appeal to the equally imperfect person.

The Teuchtlers: cult – only without a listening cabin

Die Presse: by (Samir H. Köck) | The Teuchtler record store is a secret symbol of the city. It has attracted collectors and novices since 1948. Recently also Asian women.

Rummage, dig, bull, groan – what happens at Alt & Neu, the Teuchtler family’s sound record store, has many names. Last but not least, all seekers have black fingertips, no matter what they call their actions. Where there’s vinyl, there’s dust. It is a natural law.

Getting two Detroit legendary producers, DJs Anthony “Shake” Shakir and Claude Young, together in Shake’s dining room to talk about the seminal label they started in 1994 together called Frictional was a surreal experience to say the least. There was a schoolboy type giddiness and enthusiasm alive in the room and laughter ricocheting off the walls. The energy from their synergy was truly a driving force, making the label large in the underground globally.

It was truly a hang on to your hat type experience with two global titans of Detroit electronic music going off on wild tangents about the who’s who of world’s electronic music producers, humming the basslines of tracks, talking about where samples came from, tour stories, shit talking and the like.

As our discussions progressed I could not help but think that our fun session at the dinner table was peek into how the music on this label began, except it was at Shake’s mom’s house on the Westside instead and there were a lot more people around.

The living room, in essence, was a lounge of sorts for nerd out sessions. Shake’s mom would make food and friends would kick it.  The guys from the group Strand also known as T.H.D (Brian Bonds, Brian Boyer and Kenneth “Kech” Harrington, Martin Bonds) were frequent visitors. There were lots of others. DJ extraordinaire Terrence Parker, Lenio Purry (who went on to produce tracks for Mary J Blige, Queen Latifah, Paulina Rubio), Kenneth “Kenny Flav” Dickerson (who produced tracks for the r&b groups Link, Silk. also Queen Latifah, Babyface and more), Marc (MK) and Scott Kinchen (to name a few) would also come by. All went on to do great things musically.

It wasn’t all lounging though. Track work was done in the back room studio. Gear, from instruments, drum machines and synthesizers to samplers and digital audio tape players (DAT) were back there. Almost always the setup would be different as they brought over new toys to experiment with. It was a great time in a young, Detroit underground scene.

Young, who worked feverishly on music in Shake’s back room as well (including his tracks on Frictional #1) in those early days, became friends with Shake in the early 90s when he was looking for promo vinyl at the Metroplex studio (Juan Atkins’ label.)  Young was looking for promotional records to play on his radio show and the two hit it off instantly.

“We started it (the label) as a friendship thing,” Young said. Shake added his famous tagline “I like records more than I like people…” They both were making their own tracks and they needed an outlet, thus Frictional was born.

The Begin EP was released in 1995 with Young taking one side and Shake taking the other. This was a definitive record for both producers. “March Into Darkness” was “quintessential Shake,” Young shouted out. “Your shit resonated.” Young’s tracks on the flip “Changing Factors” and “Second Experience” are also timeless classics.

Shake described Young’s tracks as “grandiose, clean and sci-fi” and Young called Shake’s fondness for redlining his recordings as “Shake levels” and that “people love that kind of dirty saturation.”  Shake laughed and added “turn the drum machine on and do your shit.”

All seventeen releases from 1995 to 2007 are true quality and books can be written about the experiences that came with each release. Although they paint a picture of Detroit at that time, the records definitely stand the test of time. In 2009, Rush Hour re-released select tracks on a compilation called Frictionalism.

Most records are Shakir’s production, but many other producers were featured including Strand, Lenio Purry, FBK (Kevin Kennedy), Scarrelly Moe (09) and Splits & Slits.

Shake’s favorite two Frictional tracks are “Like A Dream” and “Simpatico” (both on Songs for my Mother, FRCT 10.)  Simpatico is a party rocker while “Like a Dream”, as the name says, is spaced out, trippy and beautiful. Some additional fan favorites (aside from FRCT 01) are “Live For Friction” and “Breathe Deeper” (FRCT 02), “Electron Rider” (FRCT 04), “Frictionalized” (FRCT 013), “Detroit State of Mind” (FRCT 08), and Strand’s “Fourth & Go” (FRCT 012), but listen in and choose for yourselves.

Always appreciative of the support, Shake says “I just learn to say thank you…you like it, I love it… Nobody needs a record. It’s not food. It took me my whole life to learn that.”

Ash Lauryn’s biography starts off by stating she’s ‘doing it for the culture’, completely summing her mission to highlight black underground culture. Through her NTS show and blog, Underground & Black, Ash brings awareness to her experiences navigating the dance music world as a black woman and most of the music she plays is black American music – her RA podcast is a showcase of black producers across generations, both established and newcomers. 

Originally hailing from Detroit, Ash now resides in Atlanta and is very much an active member of the dance music community. She hosts Expressions parties alongside Stefan Ringer and is a resident DJ with Atlanta’s Deep South collective. Ash also hosts Underground & Black parties at famed institutions such as Movement Festival and Bossa Nova Civic Club. Capturing the world with her emotive DJ sets, some of Ash’s gigs this year include Tresor, Flow Festival, Secretsundaze, Elsewhere and The Hydra at Printworks this weekend.
