Sylvain began to be interested by electronic sounds from synthesizers in the 80’s where he grown up, surrounded by music from Herbie Hancock, Genesis, Mike Oldfield, Kraftwerk and the Electro Pop and New Wave scene. But the real first true shock was the discovery of Kevin Saunderson’s “Rock to the beat” ! Then he decided to concentrate only on Belgium’s New Beat sound and later on Acid House…
He started programming his own tracks in 1992, when he was influenced by German and English Trance music that he heard on a weekly radio show. His brother bought two Technics SL-1200 MKII in 1995, so he began mixing and learning on his own by watching, listening and analyzing DJ mixes.
Sylvain listened to all kinds of electronic dance music, but the second shock was Rhythim is Rhythim’s “Ka-O-Tic Harmony”, which made him fall in love forever with the ” Techno Detroit’s sound ” which he made his specialty (Juan Atkins Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance…), as much as Deep and Funky House and Electro (Anthony Rother, Dopplereffekt, Kraftwerk…). He’s got a ” turntablism ” touch by including Scratch into his bouncing mixes !
The style of Sylvain Marchal as DJ Slyd is now a mixing of House, Electro and Techno always pumping, always funky and never too much minimal!!! He got his technique from the like of Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Steve Rachmad, Claude Young and Deetron.
His first album was released on Minimalsoul Recordings and got congratulations from DJs like Wyndell Long (“nice to hear someone who make music with the heart”), Buzz Goree (“I support your fury !”), Sean Deason (“I can tell you that you really know what Detroit techno is !”), Orlando Voorn (“Dope album ! Keep up the good work !”), Fabrice Lig (“Very good album into the spirit of Detroit Techno godfathers”) and also support from Jay Denham, Anthony Shakir and Colin Dale.
Sylvain has taken the alias “Marc Vain” since 2010. He has been signed on many labels such as R&S Records, Sub Label Recordings, Naked City House & Crash Tune Recordings.
